Our Sourcing

Ninety per cent of all the fresh food ASDA sells that can be sourced from within the UK, is sourced from the UK.

We have a great track record of extending growing seasons, thereby reducing the need for imported food from abroad.

For instance, ASDA was the first supermarket to stop importing carrots from abroad by extending the UK carrot season from 46 to 52 weeks of the year.

Our sourcing policy

We have made a number of commitments to farmers. These are...

  • To buy UK produce wherever possible (subject to availability, quality, and food safety)
  • To increase the range of products that are locally sourced
  • To increase the volume of UK meat and produce that is sold to our customers
  • To create a level playing field for all our suppliers (home and abroad)
  • To forge closer partnerships with our suppliers
  • To promote best practice within the farming industry
  • To work in partnership with suppliers to improve product innovation
  • To grow our suppliers’ markets through investment in PR and marketing
  • To develop long-term business strategies with suppliers that foster growth through joint planning and dialogue

We work closely with thousands of farmers throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure our stores are always packed full of locally grown produce.

Farming Awards

  • In 2005 we were proud to win the Farm Business Retailer of the Year Award.
  • In November 2004 ASDA collected the prestigious BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Award for Best National or Regional Retailer, having finished runner up in 2003.
